The Virtual Wandering House
The Wandering House invites Northfield and Lanesboro residents to share, this time virtually, how notions of home have changed in light of the global pandemic and the social uprising following the killing of George Floyd. Participants can record their reflections directly at this website from August to December of 2021.
These questions are offered only as a guide. Feel free to respond all or any of them. Make sure to find a quiet space where you can ground yourself before answering these questions.

Q: What is The Virtual Wandering House?
The Wandering House is a multi-platform project that examines notions of home from a rural perspective. The project was launched in 2019 and took place in person in Northfield and Lanesboro. The project is being re-launched, this time virtually, to explore how notions of home have changed in these two places in light of the global pandemic and the social uprising following the killing of George Floyd.
Q: How can I participate?
- This project invites you to share your thoughts by recording directly to The Wandering House website (audio-only). Prior to recording, you are asked to reflect on a series of questions provided to you as a guide. You can answer whatever questions resonate the most with you (see questionnaire here).
- Once you have read the questions, fill out the consent form. Now, you are ready to record!
Q: I want to participate but don’t want to record my voice. What do I do?
After reading the questions and giving consent, fill out the questionnaire and submit it.
Q: What happens with the audio recordings and other material collected?
The gathering of recordings takes place between August and December of 2021. The selected testimonies will be used mainly in a sound-mapping website and other ancillary projects.
Q: Who is carrying out this project?
The Wandering House is the creation of artist, filmmaker and educator Cecilia Cornejo Sotelo. Originally from Chile and a long-time resident of the American Midwest, her work is known for placing community members at the center of the creative process, engaging them as active participants and co-creators of meaning.
Q: Who is supporting this project?
The Wandering House has received funding from the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC, 2019), the McKnight Foundation (2020), the Minnesota State Arts Board (2021) and the Public Works Initiative at Carleton College (2018-2021). It has received the sponsorship of the City of Northfield, the Northfield Public Library, the Human Rights Commission, the Northfield Arts Guild, the Arts & Culture Commission, and Lanesboro Arts. In addition to the above, in Northfield, we have partnered with Riverwalk Market Fair, Northfield Union of Youth (The Key), Northfield Retirement Community, Spring Wind Farm, Community Action Center, neighbors from Viking Terrace, Laura Baker Association Services. In Lanesboro our main partner is Lanesboro Arts.
Q: What are the goals of The Wandering House project?
In her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs writes that “cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.” Cecilia’s work as a whole, and The Wandering House in particular, aspires to apply Jacobs’ thinking to evolving rural towns in Minnesota. As such, this project invites people from all walks of life, especially those living in the margins, to take part in envisioning our desired future in order to create paths toward collective wellbeing.

La Casita Ambulante es un proyecto multi-plataforma que examina el significado del hogar desde una perspectiva rural. La Casita Ambulante es la creación de la artista, realizadora y docente, Cecilia Cornejo Sotelo. Nacida y criada en Chile y residente del medio-oeste Americano por muchos años, su trabajo se caracteriza por posicionar a los miembros de la comunidad al centro del proceso creativo, colaborando con ellos como co-creadores.

Q: Cuáles son los objetivos de este proyecto?
En el libro Muerte y vida de las grandes ciudades, Jane Jacobs escribe que “las ciudades tienen la capacidad de ofrecer algo para cada cual, sólo porque y sólo cuando, las ciudades son creadas por todos.” El trabajo de Cecilia en general, y de La Casita Ambulante en particular, aspira a implementar el pensamiento de Jacobs en los pueblos rurales del sur de Minnesota. Consecuentemente, este proyecto invita a personas de todos los sectores de la comunidad, y en especial a aquéllos que han sido marginados, a tomar parte en el acto de imaginar el futuro que deseamos, creando caminos hacia el bienestar colectivo.
